X to Pilot Community Notes for Surfacing Popular Posts Across Perspectives
July 24, 2025 - Elon Musk's X is launching a new experiment to expand the use of Community Notes beyond fact-checking. On Thursday, the platform's Community Notes account announced a pilot program where selected contributors will evaluate popular posts by providing input on why they like or dislike them.
This approach echoes the existing mechanics of Community Notes, which uses a "bridging algorithm" to find consensus across diverse viewpoints rather than relying on simple upvotes or downvotes. This algorithm identifies agreement between users with differing opinions to validate fact-checks before they go public.
If individuals with opposing perspectives both support a fact-check, the note becomes publicly visible. While X's fact-checking system has faced criticism for being slow and ineffective against the platform's high volume of misinformation, the concept has gained traction—even being adopted by Meta as an alternative to traditional fact-checking.
With this new initiative, X aims to test whether Community Notes can also help surface posts that resonate widely across ideological divides.
Starting today, a select group of Community Notes contributors will see a new prompt when a post starts to receive significant Likes. These contributors can then rate the post and offer feedback, which will be used to inform the algorithm about whether the content appeals to users from various backgrounds.
In its announcement, the Community Notes account said the feature could highlight "what resonates broadly."
“People often feel the world is divided, yet Community Notes shows people can agree, even on contentious topics. This experimental new feature seeks to uncover ideas, insights, and opinions that bridge perspectives,” the post read. “Following the path we used to develop Community Notes, we’re building in public with a small pilot so that this concept can be shaped by the people. We look forward to learning and iterating with you all as we do with Community Notes every day.”
