Amazon Launches DocumentDB Serverless to Streamline Operations and Cut Costs
July 31, 2025 — Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), has officially rolled out Amazon DocumentDB Serverless (compatible with MongoDB), expanding its portfolio of serverless databases. This fully managed document database solution offers dynamic scaling and cost efficiency, ideal for fluctuating workloads such as AI agents. With serverless infrastructure, customers avoid overprovisioning, enabling effortless scalability and simplified management.
According to AWS, users can lower costs by as much as 90% by eliminating the need to provision for peak capacity. Amazon DocumentDB Serverless monitors activity in real time, scaling to support millions of requests per second as needed. Demand for serverless databases has surged, with AWS reporting a doubling of its customer base over the past three years and widespread adoption across industries.
Today, enterprises including AccelByte, AppsFlyer, Atlassian, Autodesk, Canva, Elliptic, Genesys, Greenway Health, Intuit, Lyft, Rippling, Samsung, Smartsheet, SmugMug, Snap, Yum Brands, and Zoom use AWS serverless databases to handle mission-critical workloads and manage vast volumes of data.
"AWS has transformed how customers build and scale their applications by making database management effortless with serverless," said G2 Krishnamoorthy, vice president of Databases at AWS. "The rise of agents has put unprecedented demands on databases, magnifying the importance of data as a differentiator for customers."
Since introducing Amazon DynamoDB in 2012, AWS has grown its serverless database offerings to support a broad range of workloads—from Amazon Aurora DSQL for financial transactions to Amazon Neptune Serverless for fraud detection.
Serverless databases like DocumentDB Serverless are well-suited for agent-based applications, which often experience unpredictable spikes in usage. For instance, travel platforms may deploy agents to assist users with itinerary planning, requiring flexible and responsive database capacity during peak travel seasons.
Amazon DocumentDB Serverless eliminates the need for capacity planning for document workloads, such as ecommerce catalogs or gaming profile data. SaaS vendors managing numerous databases for individual customers will benefit from the service's auto-scaling and cost-effective pricing. It maintains compatibility with MongoDB APIs and supports features like vector search and multi-AZ deployments, offering developers a robust and scalable solution.
